Kursspecifika förkunskaper
EEK175-Power electronics-1
Syfte
The aim of the course is to provide the students with an advanced level of knowledge in the area of power electronics. In Power electronics 1, the idealised function of power electronic converters was the main subject, while this course focuses on the design of power electronic circuits.
Moreover a goal is to provide the students with a knowledge of how power electronic equipment interact with the utility grid, which equipment that can be used where, and how the interaction between the power electronic equipment and the utility grid can be improved.
Innehåll
The course focuses on the design of power electronic circuits. The course starts with the physics, properties and behaviour of the most important power electronic semiconductor switches such as diodes, thyristors, MOSFET's and IGBT's. The next item to be treated is control/driver circuits and snubber circuits for switching devices. Soft switching and resonant converters then follows. During the second half of the course, commercial, residential and utility applications are treated. Examples are power conditioners, power factor correction circuits (PFC), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and power electronic devices for utility applications such as HVDC and FACTS.
Organisation
The course is organised in lectures, tutorials and exercise classes. Computer-based exercises dealing with power electronic components and circuits are a part of the course in order to improve the students' understanding. A practical laboratory exercise of the design of a switching converter is also included in the course.
