Syfte

The aim of the course is to provide the student with information of "State of the art" in the field of environmental aspects of transports. The course will be focused on transportation of goods.

Innehåll

The lectures will be about three main sectors:

Sustainable mobility

The use of energy and resources in the transport sector are today very ineffective. The transport sectors relative share of the total energy use, and with that also emissions of greenhouse gases, are also increasing because the improvement of energy efficiency is much faster in the industrial and domestic sectors than in the transport sector. The present transport system must be changed dramatically if it shall be possible to achieve a "sustainable mobility".

Life Cycle Assessment of the transport sector -- A total analysis of energy use & emissions from the transport sector, from cradle to grave.

Emissions from road traffic do not only occur in the combustion process in the motor, but also when the fuel is produced, when cars are constructed and when roads are build etc. To get a complete picture of emissions and environmental load due to road traffic, the whole system has to be analysed, from source to end use.

Environmentally responsible logistics

As many companies and organisations try to comply with the environmental management systems, e.g., ISO 14000, they often realise that the transport activities generated by their business is a significant part of the companies total environmental impact. This has lead to an increased demand for less environmental polluting transport solutions. Improvements can be made not only by implementing new technique, e.g., vehicles and catalysts, but also by managing the logistic system in an environmentally responsible and resource effective way.

Organisation

The course includes lectures and a case study in the field of Life Cycle Assessment of the transport sector. The guest lectures are compulsory and active participation is essential in the following discussions. The study case and compulsory lectures (including preparations) answer to about half of the courses expected work effort.

Compendium, a collection of papers and extracts from various publications.

Examination

Written examination, passed case study and participation at the seminars/Lectures. Both the examination and the case study will contribute to final course marks.
