Production project course - pre study

The course is reserved for students in Chalmers Master's Programme in Production Engineering with knowledge requisites corresponding to preceding compulsory courses in the programme.
The purpose of this course is to enable students to solve open production engineering problems using a well structured project methodology. The intention is to immerse the students knowledge in Science Theory and their understanding of how the standpoints and values of individual engineers affect the selected approach as well as the obtained results. Furthermore increase their intellectual power, especially critical reflection capacity about their impact on society regarding all aspects of sustainability. Important aims are also that the students will get possibility to train their communication ability - to deliver well prepared oral as well as written presentations of project results.
Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)
1. Use a structured project methodology for applying knowledge and skills gained in the university education to solve an open production engineering problem
2. Describe the fundamentals of data collection and select appropriate methods to collect quantitative and qualitative data
3. Describe the fundamentals of Theory of Science and relate the problematic challenges regarding trustworthy argumentation for achieved engineering results
4. Assess the need for scientific information, search for that information and critically evaluate its relevance
5. Describe critical times and actions to ensure relevant intellectual property protection
6. Critically evaluate engineering methods for a given problem with consideration to both scientific and ethical aspects
7. Select appropriate engineering methods for fulfilling the project objectives
8. Reflect on project results and their impact on society regarding all aspects of sustainability.
9. Collaborate in accordance with a project group's needs of structured management and task distribution
10. Write a project planning report, a project report and summarize the project results in a visual format
11. Perform a clear oral presentation of the project results
12. Give constructive feedback on another project group's work and respond to similar criticism on the own project group's work.

The course includes a series of lectures and seminars aiming to give the students general knowledge about project methodology, project planning, theory of science, intellectual property rights and communication skills.
After forming groups, students select project themes from a number of alternatives. To guide the students through their projects and to assist them with reaching the learning objectives, each group meets an own supervisor once a week at the university.
Each group is provided with a platform for continuous communication and documentation. This platform is used both to assist learning activities and for the supervisors to follow and assess the projects as well as examining some of the course learning objectives.

The project work and the quiz are cornerstones in determining the grades. With regard to the learning objectives the assessment takes place in the project groups based on the individual contribution to the project's results, quality of the planning report and the final report. The presentations and opponent effort will also determine the grading: Fail, 3, 4 or 5.
