Basic courses in materials science and manufacturing technology including metal cutting.


The course aims at facilitating manufacturing engineering knowledge at advanced level regarding metal cutting, which is one of the most value-adding operations in modern manufacturing industry.

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

- describe the basic concepts regarding machine capabilities, tooling, cutting tool selection and applications in production engineering
- select cutting tools, cutting fluids and machining parameters for specific operations and work piece materials
- analyse and optimise metal cutting processes for specific needs and applications using statistical methods, characterisation and testing/experiments
- use advanced laboratory equipment to study and assess machining of advanced engineering materials
- implement critical sustainability aspects with respect to working conditions, environment and productivity in metal cutting


The course aims at facilitating manufacturing engineering knowledge at advanced level regarding metal cutting, which is one of the most value-adding operations in modern manufacturing industry. Fundamentals regarding mechanics and material behaviour in metal cutting will be addressed and specific focus will be placed on engineering aspects of cutting tools, cutting tool materials, machine capabilities, cutting fluids, selection of machining parameters and the evaluation and optimisation of machining operations. This will include how to set up machining experiments, to control them, to measure and why, to evaluate tool wear and to characterize the resulting surface of the work-piece material. A key issue will be to understand how to realise productivity in metal cutting while considering sustainability (health and environmental aspects). The use of statistical methods, process simulation (FE), material characterisation/microscopy/X-ray (surface toppgraphy, surface structure, residual stress, etc) will be addressed. In particular, how to functionalize surfaces for specific product performance will be an important part in the course.


The course is based on overview lectures, dedicated exercises and tutored practicals where modern machining equipment, measurement techniques and machining development are demonstrated. The practicals will form the basis for a project assignment where each participant will train the most important parts in optimising and developing metal cutting operations. Guest lecturers from industry and study visits will be included in the course. The lectures will be given in English.


Text book Metal Cutting, EM Trent Paul K. Wright (Fourth Edition) (available in the library as an ebook) and course material newly developed by Swedish universities in co-operation with Swedish industry.


Book seminars and mandatory project work. Participating in all lectures/labs sessions is compulsory.
