Kursspecifika förkunskaper

Elective course for students in the master programs Supply Chain Management and in the specialisation Production management at the Production Engineering master program.

Other students may be accepted if there is room available. Admittance will be decided on a case-by-case basis. As a minimum, applicants should have taken courses in the field of
(i) general/operations management (at least 7,5 hec), and
(ii) industrial engineering (at least 7,5 hec)

Syfte

The course focuses on the nodes in supply chains and the operations involving materials in these nodes. The nodes represent some type of production system, terminal, warehouse etc, and the materials are products (in or not in production processes), modules, sub-assemblies, components etc.
The aim of the course is to give a deep understanding of how to design and operate production flows and materials handling in supply chain nodes, and the effects of different choices and decisions. Knowledge of production flows and materials handling, is essential to be able to understand the performance dimensions of a node, e.g. a production unit, and the dependence on planning and control, organization, layout etc.

Organisation

In the course organisation a case study project is vital as a red thread through the course. The case study project implies the design of a production system, focusing materials handling and production flow, and is organised in a few sequential steps. Through the case study project can the course content discussed at lectures, guest lectures, literature seminars and laboratory seminars be operationalised/applied and understood by the students. The case study project is performed by teams of students. During the case study project there are scheduled occasions for consultation, individual for each team. Some content will be discussed in the form of literature seminars (two) involving one or two student teams each time. As the course content is strongly connected to industrial operations are some course content treated through site visits. At the visits are methods for analyse and design applied (laboratory seminars). The number of course moments for an individual student is in total approximately: 25 hrs lectures, 8 hrs guest lectures, 2 hrs literature seminars, 2 site visits, 4 hrs case seminars, 2 hrs case consultation.

Litteratur

Two basic textbooks Baudin, M (2002) and (2004), are the main literature, both available as electronic books at Chalmers Library. Also a selection of scientific papers are used to treat specific topics, to be able to approach the research edge and for literature seminars.

Examination

Literature seminars with individual papers, a laboratory study project report and three case study project reports and seminars constitute the bases for examination, in order to achieve grade 3. The laboratory study project and case study projects, accomplished by team of students, are used to stimulate debate and reinforce materials presented in the lectures. The projects are presented by the students and so act as a final summary of the outcome of the course. The examination is based on an assessment of the oral and written presentations. Participation in some course activities such as site visit, case seminars, laboratory seminars, literature seminars, guest lectures are compulsory. To achieve a higher grade than grade 3, a literature test can be taken in the end of the course, see the course schedule.
