Kursspecifika förkunskaper

A basic course in mathematical statistics.

Syfte

The goal is to introduce the student to some important mathemati-
cal software packages and problem solving skills with computer,
and making the computer a natural problem solving tool, via work
on concrete mathematical and mathematical statistical and problems

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

- use these software packages as natural tools in later courses
- have developed problem solving skills
- move between analytical and numerical problem solving methods with use of computer
- write mathematical reports using LaTex.

Innehåll

The core of the course are six projects in different areas of mathematics and mathematical statistics and their applications, including finance, bioinformatics, and bootstrap. Each project contains a number of problems to be solved, mainly using the software packages Matlab, Mathematica, R and C. The projects are presented at lectures and the software packages are introduced during teacher led laborations. It depends on the problem at hand what software package is the best suited to deal with it. However, all four packages can be used to deal with two or more of the projects. In particular it will be possible for students with a special interest in the statistical package R to make extensive use of that package. The project reports in LaTeX should be handed in shortly after the end of the course, at latest.

Examination

Written reports of the results of the work with the projetcs. The grading is based on how the problems in the projects are solved and reported.
