Kursspecifika förkunskaper

Semi compulsory for students in the master program in Production Engineering. Elective for students in the master programs Supply Chain Management, Quality and Operations Management, and for students from the programs Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. As a minimum, applicants should have taken courses in the field of:
(i) general/operations management (at least 7,5 hec), and
(ii) industrial engineering (at least 7,5 hec)

Syfte

The aim of the course is to give a nuanced and contextual understanding of the lean philosophy, the principles of lean operations and lean operation systems. The course form the basis for further, wider and specific, studies concerning lean business models.

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

- explain fundamental concepts, strategies and principles of lean operation
- explain the relation between the fundamental principles of lean operation and its application a specific company and context
- describe the method of set up time reduction (SMED)
- explain the purpose with and method for standardised work
- ability to compare pull and push planning systems and its consequences on information and materials flows
- dimensioning of kanban systems
- describe the utilization of and requirements for different types of continuous process flows in lean production
- perform a value stream mapping (map and improve the value stream map of products)
- describe the lean logistics concepts
- explain the relations between different work organisation, technical design, methods, tools etc. in a lean transformation process
- explain how team work and involvement are keystone in the lean philosophy and how to design and manage efficient improvement (kaizen) teams
- apply an PDCA-methodology for continuous improvements
- describe how to perform a lean transformation process

Organisation

The course is based on lectures, literature seminars and case studies. The literature seminars and the case studies are used to stimulate debate and strengthen the understanding of the materials presented in the lectures. The different themes (contents) of the course are structured in number of different parts. Specialist, from universities and industry, within the different parts will take part in the course. The course contents are strongly connected to industrial operations, and some course content is treated through site visits where lean methods and techniques are trained.

Examination

Literature seminars with individual papers, group papers and a project report constitute the bases for examination, in order to achieve grade 3. Participation in some course activities such as site visits, case seminars and laboratory seminars are compulsory. To achieve a higher grade than grade 3, a non-compulsory test can be taken in the end of the course.
