Syfte

The aim of the course is to provide the student with knowledge and "State of the art" in the field of environmental aspects of logistics and freight transport.

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

- Define sustainable development for the freight transport sector
- Explain the unsustainable impacts of the freight transport sector
- Sketch the energy use and emissions of transport chains
- Judge measures and actions for environmentally responsible logistics
- Compose strategies towards sustainable logistics

Innehåll

The lectures will be about three main sectors:
- Sustainable logistics
The use of energy and resources in the transport sector are today very ineffective. The transport sectors relative share of the total energy use, and with that also emissions of greenhouse gases, are also increasing due to an increased demand for transport services and also because the improvement of energy efficiency is much faster in the industrial and domestic sectors than in the transport sector. The present transport system must be changed dramatically if it shall be possible to achieve a "sustainable logistics and freight transport system".
- Environmental impact from transport chains.
Emissions from freight transport differ significantly depending on transport mode and vehicle & Vessel technology. Other important factor that defines the environmental impact from freight transport is the load factor of the system, distribution patterns, in the packages, and the character of the goods. To get a complete picture of emissions and external costs on society due to road traffic, the whole chain has to be analysed.
- Environmentally responsible logistic strategies and tools
Many companies and organisations often realise that the transport activities generated by their business is a significant part of the company¿s total environmental impact. This has led to an increased demand for cost efficient solutions and strategies to meet the new environmental demands. Technological improvements e.g., intermodal solutions, vehicles, fuels and catalysts will not be enough to solve the problem. Even more important is to complement the technical improvements with more environmentally adapted and resource effective ways to managing the logistic system.

Organisation

The course includes lectures and a case study in the field of Life Cycle Assessment of the freight transport sector. The guest lectures are normally compulsory and active participation is essential in the following discussions. The study case and compulsory lectures (including preparations) answer to about half of the courses expected work effort.

A collection of papers and extracts from various publications.

Examination

A number of examination reports to be handed in during the course, passed case study and participation at the compulsory lectures. Both the examination reports and the case study will contribute to final course marks.
