General prerequisites for master programs

Syfte

This course aims to provide a basic understanding of the principles of specifying and producing services. The course emphasizes technology and knowledge based services that are difficult to specify or to monitor, and often coproduced by providers and buyers.

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

By the end of this course, students will be able to: - apply the elements of transaction cost analysis and explain why firms choose to buy certain services rather than produce them in-house, - describe service procurement principles and contractual arrangements, including specification, pricing and monitoring, and explain their applicability in various contexts, - recognize how formal and informal dimensions of business relations interact and identify aspects central to trust and cooperation, - apply principles of the theory of negotiation, - understand how contract law supports business-to-business service contracts. - in a group assignment, describe and analyse business service relations according to theories treated in the course.

Innehåll

- The service economy, types of services, principles of service management - Drivers for outsourcing, developments of markets, transaction cost analysis - Procurement - choice of contract form, principles for specifying and monitoring. Pricing and incentives. Public procurement - Interaction and communication in contract relations: trust, fairness, management issues - Negotiations: theory and practice - Contract law - Cases from construction, product development, IT consultancy and support services for growth firms

Organisation

The course consists of - lectures, including guest speakers from industry and academia - cases and exercises - a group assignment The group assignment is partly based on interviews in service firms, written in groups, and will be presented and discussed in seminars.
