Kursspecifika förkunskaper
Basic knowledge in statistics is needed in order to meet the course requirements. The student should be familiar with concepts such as: probability, probability density function, cumulative distribution function, normal distribution, binomial distribution, Poisson distribution, standard deviation, error types 1 and 2 etc.
Syfte
The aim of the course is to help the students to acquire knowledge about various quality endeavors to better understand the area of Total Quality Management (TQM). The course also aims to help the students to develop practical skills as a means to facilitate organizational improvement initiatives.
Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)
The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge about various quality approaches and the "quality tool box" in order to develop an understanding of the area of Quality Management . The course also aims to help the students to develop practical skills in using quality methods and tools as a means to facilitate organizational improvement initiatives.
Innehåll
The course provides an overview of the quality management field and practical training in both qualitative and quantitative quality tools. The course includes lectures, seminars, exercises, and laboratory classes. Guest lecturers and a study visit provide insights into how quality improvement initiatives are carried out in practice. Topics covered in the course:
- Introduction: Principles for organizing, economic rationale of TQM, history of the quality movement, Deming’s profound knowledge
- Quality in Product Development and Customer Orientation
- Design of Experiments
- Robust Design Methodology
- Statistical Process Control/Improvement
- QC- and management tools
- Process Analysis and Benchmarking
- Six Sigma programs
- Continuous learning and problem solving cycles
- Change management and leadership
Organisation
The main building blocks of the course consist of: lectures, literature seminars and group work. There is also a laboratory class where the students are given the opportunity of improving the flying time of a paper helicopter by applying the Design of Experiments methodology.
Litteratur
A basic first reading is Bergman and Klefsjö (2003) or equivalent. Further deepening will be obtained from the readings of journal papers and other material distributed during the course.

Examination
The examination forms will include: written examination, report on the laboratory class and a mid-term interactive assessment.
