För den som anmäler sig till utbildningsprogram eller kurs med undervisningsspråk engelska är behörighetskravet lägst betyg E eller G i Engelska kurs 6 eller B. Engelskkunskaperna kan även styrkas genom ett av de tester och testresultat som finns listade på chalmers.se.

Utbildningens huvudsakliga uppläggning:


Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field. This programme is therefore firmly based on both Physics and Chemistry and aim to provide a thorough understanding of the properties of nanosized systems and to provide the skills to prepare them.

Science at the nanoscale takes place both in a bottom-up approach (forming functional architectures based on interactions between individual molecules) and in a top-down approach (nanostructuring). The core courses provide broad practical knowledge in both approaches. In addition, there are tracks with semi-compulsory and elective courses leading to in-depth knowledge in specific areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

The students study and work in the vibrant and strong research environment at the crossroad between three departments: MC2, Physics, and Chemistry. All of the teachers involved in the core of this program are simultaneously researchers at the forefront of the nanoscience field both nationally and internationally.

The students are prepared for a professional career in a technical-industrial environment and in scientific research (either industrial or academic). In the first place careers related to the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology are intended. The aim of the program is, however, sufficiently general that it also prepares well for careers outside this field.



After completion of this program, the student

1. can construct scientific models of systems on the nanoscale, using basic principles, and furthermore use these models for quantitative analysis of the properties and possibilities offered by the specific system.
2. can make well founded estimates of the complexity and possibilities of a proposed project, based on the available theoretical and experimental techniques.
3. is experienced in scientific communication. This includes using the existing scientific literature in an efficient way, as well as being able to efficiently and convincingly communicate his/her conclusions to different audiences in English, using oral, written, and electronic means.
4. has experience from working in a cleanroom environment. For structuring materials on the nanoscale, a cleanroom is a truly indispensable facility. All students get hands on experience in the world-class clean room environment at MC2. This is a unique opportunity, since most clean room facilities of this class do not allow for undergraduate students

The Masters Programme in Nanotechnology is tailored to students aiming at international careers in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, both regarding the fundamentals of nanoscience and how to design and build components on the nanoscale.

Many future applications in electronics, telecommunications, computing and information systems, natural and artificial bio-systems and medicine will be based on the development of nanoscale technologies, often at the interface between physics, chemistry, biology and computer science. Theoretical and practical knowledge in these fields is therefore of increasing importance to both industry and academia.

Generic competencies include knowledge of available theoretical and experimental techniques, the ability to communicate and present technical information and the ability to analyse and identify a means to solve a given problem.

The unique competencies delivered by the programme include knowledge of the innovative possibilities of nanotechnology, ample hands-on experience in experimental techniques for both manufacturing and analysis including working in a cleanroom environment and a solid theoretical background in the physics, chemistry and technology of nanoscale devices.

The programme has a visible connection to frontline research and many course projects will be embedded in actual research projects. Nano at Chalmers has a strong infrastructure with advanced laboratories and cleanroom facilities which support a broad spectrum of activities involving over 150 researchers.

Applications of our research range from electronics to medicine and biology. Our industrial collaboration is well established and we have successfully launched several spin-off companies.

Our core research comprises three profile areas: nanophysics with a top-down perspective, nanochemistry with a bottom-up focus and nanobiophysics, which forms a bridge between the other two.

The connection to one of Chalmers' Areas of Advance, Nano, further enables interdisciplinary collaboration within Chalmers and reinforces collaboration with academia, industry and society throughout the world.
