Examen på grundnivå:

Major in Industrial Design Engineering or Product Design Engineering.



Mathematics 15 cr., Mechanical engineering 45 cr. (including Mechanics, Materials technology and Manufacturing technology), Industrial design 45 cr. (including Design methodology, Visualization and Computer aided modeling), Human factors engineering 7,5 cr. (including Ergonomics and Human machine interaction).
A project portfolio containing three examples of design projects.

Utbildningens huvudsakliga uppläggning:


The aim of the programme is to prepare students for a professional career in industrial product development and design. The student should develop further theoretical as well as practical knowledge of methods and tools for innovative product development and design and, further, knowledge and skills to be able to take part of and lead the process of developing and designing innovative products and product systems taking different aspects into consideration including technical, human, and formal aspects.




Knowledge and understanding
The student should be able to
  • describe the scienticfic bases within areas elevant for product development and industrial design engineering

  • describe and assess different product development theories including theories on design work and design practice

  • describe and reflect upon the state-of-the art in product development research, including engineering design, industrial design and human factors engineering

  • demonstrate a deeper knowledge and understanding of product development and industrial design engineering.
    This means to be able to:
    - describe and assess different product development strategies
    - describe and assess different methods, tools and techniques for conceiving, designing, and implementing design solutions
    - describe and reflect upon the role of processes, methods and tools for strategic, tactical and operative design decisions

Abilities and skills
The student should be able to
  • demonstrate the skills and ability to independently analyse, define and deal with a complex industrial design engineering problem.
    This means to be able to:
    - collect and use the relevant information needed for solving an industrial design engineering problem
    - choose and employ the relevant theories, methods and tools for different stages of the development process: for project planning; for idea generation and assessment; for concept development and assessment; as well as for detailed design

  • create design solutions taking into consideration different aspects.
    This means to be able to:
    - apply and integrate relevant theoretical knowledge in engineering design (mechanics, materials technology, and production technology), industrial design (basic design, aesthetics) and ergonomics/human factors to an industrial design engineering problem
    - apply relevant theories, methods and tools in solving technical design problems
    - apply relevant theories, methods and tools in solving formal design problems
    - apply relevant theories, methods and tools in solving design problems concerning the interplay with - man and machine-
    - critically and systematically handle and harmonise different types and (possibly) conflicting requirements
    - critically assess, choose and justify design proposals from different perspectives (technical, human, social etc.)

  • efficiently and in a professional manner, communicate plans, results, thoughts and ideas to different target groups.
    This means to be able to
    - communicate, orally and in writing, with experts as well as non-experts
    - communicate, orally and in writing, in a national as well as in an international context
    - choose and use different methods and tools for communication including computer-supported tools for visualisation
    - demonstrate skill and ability to work in teams
    - demonstrate skill and ability to plan, organize and lead work in product development teams
    - demonstrate skill and ability to follow up and evaluate work in product development teams
    - demonstrate skill and ability to co-operate in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments

Formulation of judgements and attitudes
The student should be able to
  • formulate judgements regarding technology and technical development that reflect scientific, social and ethical considerations

  • critically assess the possibilities and limitations of technology and technical development, its role in society, and its role in people's everyday life

  • demonstrate awareness and insight regarding the importance of further knowledge and increased competence



Omfattning: 120.0 c


Självständigt arbete:

The master's thesis work (30 credits) should deal with a clearly defined topic within a restricted areas of what has been previously studied at courses within the Master programme. It can be carried out at Chalmers, in industry, in research institute or at other universities. Although, the examiner has always to be a teacher from Chalmers. To start the thesis work the student must have passed 45 credits of courses from the programme. Students pursuing the five-year Master of Science in Engineering training must have passed at least 225 credits before beginning work on a thesis.

There is a possibility to carry out an extended master's thesis project (60 credits) with a clear research orientation. There will only be a limited number of such theses available (applied for in competition with your fellow students), and the requirements of the students are higher than for a normal thesis. A goal of a 60 credit thesis is to produce research results good enough to be presented at international conferences or journals. The degree designation is Master of Science (120 credits) (Teknologie masterexamen). The name of the Master's programme and the major subject are stated in the degree diploma. Specializations and tracks are not stated in the degree diploma.



Industrial Design Engineering

Övrig information:

The master programme encompasses compulsory courses (30 credits), semi compulsory courses (30 credits), elective courses (30 credits) and a master thesis (30 or 60 credits ). The first year is intended to provide the students with a common platform for the further studies within the programme. Courses in industrial design-related subjects and in engineering design-related subjects are to be studied in parallel in order to comply with the overall aim of the master’s programme. The student may choose between a narrow or a broad profile. A broad profile implies a choice of courses in engineering design related courses and/or in industrial design related courses and/or in courses that concern, e.g., managerial issues. A narrow profile implies a specialisation. Two specialisations are offered in for of course blocks.
Two specializations are offered in form of course blocks;

Human Factors Engineering - stands for problems associated with designing the interaction between users and technical products/systems. It includes two compulsory courses; Ergonomics design for all and Cognitive ergonomics.

Product Design Engineering - means a further focus on formal and semantic design problems. It includes three compulsory courses; Form design Development, Form Design Development - advanced course and Computer aided modeling - advanced course.

Courses can also be chosen from other suitable masterprogrammes at Chalmers. Additionally, the student may choose a specialisation, preparing him or her for post-graduate training and research.
