Utbildningens huvudsakliga uppläggning:


The aim of the Automotive Engineering programme (AE) is to prepare students for a professional career within the automotive engineering field, whether in industry or in academia. The programme provides knowledge of the vehicle as a system and from this platform the student can focus within Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics or Safety or a more general curriculum with a deepened focus on product development and project management may be chosen.



The Automotive Engineering programme should provide the students with possibilities to develop enhanced skills for analysis, synthesis and management of the automotive development process.

After completion of the AE programme the student will be able to:

Comprehension level

- identify and discuss vehicles as complex systems from a technical and a social perspective through a broad platform in automotive engineering.

Analysis level

- analyze new technical challenges and to create technical advancements in the automotive industry by three specialization tracks; Safety, Powertrain or Vehicle Dynamics.

Synthesis and Evaluation level

- synthesize and evaluate automotive systems and products in terms of direct use and lifecycle analysis through consideration of environmental and economic aspects.

Application level

- through applications and practice utilize automotive related IT- and product development tools.

-demonstrate skills necessary for managing and contributing to team-based engineering activities and projects in a multi-cultural environment.

Självständigt arbete:

The master's thesis work (30 credits) should deal with a clearly defined topic within a restricted areas of what has been previously studied at courses within the Master programme. It can be carried out at Chalmers, in industry, in research institute or at other universities. Although, the examiner has always to be a teacher from Chalmers. To start the thesis work the student must have passed 45 credits of courses from the programme. Students pursuing the five-year Master of Science in Engineering training must have passed at least 225 credits before beginning work on a thesis.


There is a possibility to carry out an extended master’s thesis project (60 credits) with a clear research orientation. There will only be a limited number of such theses available (applied for in competition with your fellow students), and the requirements of the students are higher than for a normal thesis. A goal of a 60 credit thesis is to produce research results good enough to be presented at international conferences or journals. Automotive engineering is a broad subject and very hard to cover within one master programme. Therefore the Chalmers programme has focused its education within three areas, Powertrain, Vehicle Dynamics and Safety and three specializations have been tailored. In addition to the six mandatory courses another two within the specialization is required. Students choosing a specialization will have four elective courses instead of six. Due to the wide area of Automotive Engineering, a cooperation with other master programmes has been started, resulting in a list of elective courses from Materials, NVH, Production, Electronics, Mechatronics and Industrial Design recommended for an Automotive Engineer.

In addition, it is strongly recommended to choose one of the Automotive Engineering Projects as it provides an extensive training in automotive product development and project management in a team with students from different backgrounds and culture – as it will be in industry.


The Powertrain track is focused on energy conversion, management and control of the vehicle powertrain. Courses include studies of internal combustion engines and other primary power units, as well as of transmissions and driveline. Areas that are covered are engine processes (combustion and emissions formation), mechanical analysis of the engine, the driveline and the transmission, and control strategies and systems used to control the powertrain, e.g. like that found in hybrid vehicles. Environmental effects (fuel consumption and regulated emissions) constitute a vital part of this concentration.


Vehicle Dynamics

The Vehicle Dynamics track is focused on topics related to the dynamic operation and control of the vehicle. It provides a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the vertical, longitudinal and lateral dynamics. This includes specializations in modelling and analysis of tyres, brakes and suspension. Modelling and assembly of the full vehicle, e.g. load distributions due to aerodynamic forces is also covered. Environmental effects (i.e. low fuel consumption, noise and vibrations) and active safety (e.g. side-wind disturbances and different road surfaces) are central issues within this track.



The Safety track is focused on safety systems and solutions contributing to prevent and reduce traffic accidents and injuries. The track is directed towards systems for both active and passive safety within vehicles as well as in the infrastructure. The central courses cover crash compatibility, infrastructure design, impact biomechanics, behaviour science (Driver Vehicle Interaction), accident investigations and reconstructions, electric and non electric measurements and analysis techniques for transient events, advanced control theory and communication techniques.



To be awarded the Master's degree the student has to

  • pass at least 45 credits of compulsory courses

  • finish a master's thesis in a subject approved by the programme coordinator.

  • pass elective courses or make a larger 60 credits thesis work to acquire a total of 120 credits, of which at least 90 credits must be advanced level courses (thesis included).



The degree designation is Master of Science (120 credits) (Teknologie masterexamen). The name of the Master's programme and the major subject are stated in the degree diploma. Specializations and tracks are not stated in the degree diploma.

The Automotive Engineering programme leads to a wide range of career opportunities within design, development and research in the automotive industry aiming towards employment at automotive manufacturing companies, engineering houses, consultant organizations and suppliers. Additionally, other career opportunities may be found as academic researchers, technical advisors, project leaders and teachers at different levels.
