Syfte

The goal of Sustainable Development in industry should be: 1) Achieving safety in production, products, and usage of these products, 2) ensuring human health, 3) protecting the environment and, 4) running the world ecosystem in acceptable steady-state conditions with respect to materials, energy and population. Therefore safety is an important part of sustainability. In fact safety is efficiency and brings profit.


The objective of the course is to give the students an understanding of analysis principles and concepts and give the training in how to apply their abilities to improve human safety, to pro¬tect the environment, and to improve process and system chain quality and productivity. In addition they could evaluate economic risks and assess risk as a result of uncertainties by using special software.

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

The course prepares students to approach the technical skills required to fulfil the following tasks:



  • To be able to use risk assessment to identify hazardous scenarios as the causes of loss in a system or an organization

  • To apply risk analysis techniques to modify the system in terms of safety, productivity/profitability, quality, and environmentally benign

  • Being able to improve or modify the system reliability by identifying various risk control measures available

  • Being able to use risk analysis in decision making under uncertainty situations

  • Critically analyze and design a risk management plan for a production system or an organization


And finally to understand the aim of CE marking representing the requirements which are set out in EC-directives.

Innehåll

In this course the following techniques will be reviewed:



- Lectures



  • Major hazard accidents

  • Basic concepts of risk,

  • Hazard identification procedures and techniques such as What-if, Hazop, FMEA, etc

  • Consequence analysis and modelling

  • Special lecture will be given to the students with chemical engineering background in consequence analysis concerning release of chemical hazards including discharge models, dispersion and effect models

  • Fire and ex¬plosion models, effect models,...

  • Estimation of incident frequencies (estimation of incident frequencies from historical data, frequency modelling techniques e. g. FTA and ETA)

  • Human factors in risk analysis

  • Calculation and presentation of risk (individual risk, societal risk)

  • Risk management in small enterprises (difficulties and support)

  • Risk management and risk management in complex systems

  • Risk reduction and risk control in haulage, route planning control in transportation

  • Risk and financial evaluation of a project

  • Supply chain risk management

  • Ecological/environmental risk assessment

  • Risk of chemical reactions e. g. chemical reactivity and run away

  • Design of equipment and systems (design, inherent safety, lay out, components and Equipment)

  • Minimizing of disturbances in production

  • Risk in civil engineering including tunnelling and construction

  • Environmental risk in maritime

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, work-shops, a project work, seminars, training by means of a computer program (@Risk) on economic evaluation of projects and decision making in a situation faced with plenty of uncertainty factors. Two study visit to a company producing and handling hazardous chemicals will be arranged


 

Litteratur

The literature consists of a specially written text on risk assessment (compendium), excerpts from textbooks on risk assessment, selected reports and articles gathered in a binder. The binder is sold to the students at the beginning of the course.


 

Examination

Home assignment (40%), seminar (5%), workshops (5%) and a project work (50%). The project work will be carried out in groups.
