Syfte

The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge and understanding of the field of human factors engineering, including methods and tools for human centred design, usable for different application areas such as product design, vehicle design, production systems design, and general workplace design. The theoretical parts include physical ergonomics (anatomy, anthropometry, biomechanics), cognitive ergonomics (mental performance) and environmental factors (vision, sound, vibrations, climate).

The aim of the course is give an understanding of human capacities and limitations in the interaction with artefacts and workplaces, as well as get insight and training in methods useful for data collection, evaluation and design of human-machine system. Furthermore, the students should be able to practically apply this knowledge in their own chose of project in line with their interests and direction of master studies.

Describe and explain basic ergonomic theory (Cognitive, Physical, Organisational and Physical factors)
Chose, use and interpret basic ergonomic theory in relation to artefacts
Evaluate and criticise basic ergonomic theory in relation to artefacts
Chose, use and interpret basic ergonomic methods in relation to artefacts
Evaluate and criticise basic ergonomic methods in relation to artefacts
Plan and carry out an ergonomic study on a real case
Demonstrate and show the result from an ergonomic study
Illustrate, explain and design human-machine system in regards to ergonomics
Compose requirements and designs based on ergonomic theory and methods

Innehåll

Cognitive ergonomics: such as sensory input, attention, perception, memory functions, decision making, stress, mental workload and human error.

Physical ergonomics: such as anatomy, anthropometry, biomechanics, physical loadings, biological variation and comfort

Physical factors: such as vision and lighting, hearing and noise, vibrations and climate

Organisational ergonomics: such as stressors in work environment, economic effects of ergonomics

Ergonomic methods: such as user description, task analysis, interaction analysis, physical loading analysis

Human Machine System: such as system theory, user interface, control room, automation, risk and safety

Human Factors Engineering: such as design methods, requirement management, development process

Organisation

The course is divided into two parts; general theory and an applied project. All students study the general theory together; the applied project is then made in small groups of students with the same area of interest.
Initially, lectures will be given in the field human factors engineering. The lectures introduce basic theoretical knowledge and methods from the area of human-machine interaction and ergonomics. Theoretical hand-in tasks, based on the lectures and literature, are included in the first part of the course, to get a deeper understanding of the subject. This part will give the students prerequisites to study the advanced courses in Ergonomics.
In the applied project an existing human-machine system should be analysed and redesigned according to human capacities and limitations. The project can deal with product design, vehicle/automotive design, production system design or other types of workplace design. In connection to the projects, theme lectures are given by human factors specialists from different areas, both from academia and industry.
