Behörighet:

Kursspecifika förkunskaper
Basic courses in mechanics
Syfte
Students are to attain an understanding in:
• Traffic related injuries, effect on life, and cost for society and means to reduce these injuries and cost
• Crash worthiness
• In crash compatibility between different road users and between road users and road furniture
• Restraint designs and their principal function; for adults, children and vulnerable road users.
• Regulatory testing; Test facilities, barriers and loading devices, measurement systems, crash test dummies (design requirements based on biological models), injury criteria (basic anatomy, injuries and models used to study injury criteria) and reference values
• Other sources of information that effect the safety aspects of vehicle design (Safety ratings and real life performance requirements)
• Infrastructure design to reduce accident risk and impact severity
• Active safety devices on the market: its design and functionality
• Human aspects of traffic safety (or of active safety devices)
The level of understanding should be such that the students in their profession as engineers should be able to read the literature in the field of active and passive safety, take part in tests of passive and active restraint systems and basic knowledge of the complexity of designing safe vehicles.
Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)
Describe various means to reduce traffic related fatalities and injuries
Discuss the effect of different car structure design and crash configurations on in-crash load paths in the vehicle and in the occupants
Explain means to avoid incompatibility between different road vehicles and road furniture
Describe how car restraints and car structure can reduce injury risk
Design and perform a crash test, filter and analyse data, suggest applicable injury criteria and calculate injury criteria values
Portray the differencees between a crash test - dummy/loading device and the human body
Describe how different body regions respond to loads; biomechanical and physiological response
Understand the impact of Product Liability, Rating and Regulations on vehicle and restraint design
List the most important sensor principles under consideration for automotive safety applications and to explain their technological advantages and limitations
Explain the design and the function of state-of-art active safety systems
Innehåll
The course consists of lectures and a laboratory exercise. The lectures will cover:
Accidentology and epidemiology
Crash worthiness
Compatibility
Future vehicle designs
Restraint designs
Testing
Crash test dummy design
Injury assessments
Infrastructure design
Active Safety
Organisation
About 50 hours of scheduled lectures. Lecturers will cover the different
subject areas with connection to the specific area in their daily work and research. The contents of the lectures are to a great extent included in the course literature, but the lecturers will also present much from their own experience and knowledge.
Laboratory Exercises:
One laboratory exercise will be carried out in the course. The purpose of this work is to investigate mechanical testing aspects of crash safety, to get acquainted with video analysis, measuring systems, instruments, crash test dummy parts and to analyse the obtained data. Each individual is responsible for one sub task within a larger project. Each group will present their test results in a report and present orally during a seminar.
Each group should include 6 persons.
