Syfte

The purpose of this course is to describe the new, important methods being industrially used today. By mixing lectures and many practical features like laboratory work and company visits, the course strives to give you knowledge of everything from practical problems which arises in manufacturing to theoretical questions in preparation and production development.

Lärandemål (efter fullgjord kurs ska studenten kunna)

Describe important manufacturing processes with respect to performance (productivity), economics and environmental impact
Connect product quality (tolerances and surface exterior/integrity) with manufacturing process properties
Explain the trends in development of both traditional and untraditional manufacturing methods.
Describe the practical problems which industry faces when manufacturing modern, high-tech products often in tough materials
Make relevant process selections in the areas; Metal forming, metal cutting and non-traditional manufacturing methods in a product life cycle development.

Innehåll

In the course Modern Manufacturing Processes the most important manufacturing methods and processes are described as well as their development and potential with respect to materials selection, economy and environmental considerations. That includes modern sheet metal forming, high-speed machining-HSM and precision machining. An important part of the course deals with unconventional machining using for example laser beam technology, abrasive water-jet, electrical discharges or etchants (Chemical Machining-CHM).
The course Manufacturing-up-to-date describes the modern and industrially used manufacturing methods of today. This course is based on the knowledge gained in the preceding course MPR093 in basic manufacturing engineering.

8. Thermal methods: Laser, plasma, EDM and EBM

Litteratur

Course binder, assembled by the department. The binder contains a variety of information sources. Written theory is mixed with scientific articles to get both the basics and the ongoing development of the different manufacturing methods. The binder is sold at Chalmers bookstore Cremona.

Examination

Written exam, fulfilled exercises and laboratory work.
