Extend residence permit

Apply on-line at the Swedish Migration Agency’s web site. Application for extension should be submitted while the current state is still valid and at the earliest six months before the current state ends.

Extend residence permit for the second year of the Master Programme

If you meet the criteria for acceptable progress in your studies you should print all required documents by yourself. Use the on-line services "Create a transcript of records" and “Create a certificate of registration” at the Student Portal. You will be re-directed to Student Ladok, select "Get certificate". You also need to attach your Notification of selection results (see below) to your application. The Swedish Migration Agency will acknowledge these documents.​

Extend residence permit for completing the master thesis 

If you need an extended residence permit for completing your master thesis, the supervisor should issue the certificate below. The certificate should be included in your application to support your academic results and explain your study situation. Forward it to your supervisor for completion, printing, and signing. 
 

Extend residence permit for completing courses

If you have unfinished courses left after the date you originally were expected to be finished with your studies, you need to fill out the form found below and contact your Student Guidance Councelor for approval. The certificate should be included in your application to support your academic results and explain your study situation. Forward it to your Student Guidance Councelor for completion, printing, and signing.

 

If you can't return to your home country due to Covid-19 

If you have a residence permit that is about to expire, do not intend to extend this and have planned to leave Sweden, but cannot leave due to travel restrictions, you can apply for a visitor’s residence permit.

Notification of selection results

The official notification of selection results is available on your account at universityadmissions.se and serves as an official document in your application.

The certificates inform about your studies and study situation. The decision about residence permit is made by the Swedish Migration Agency. For questions about the application process, contact the Swedish Migration Agency.

Study break

If you consider taking a study break, please note that the requirements from the Swedish Migration Agency for acceptable progress in your studies do not change, regardless of a registered study break.
