An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Undergraduate profile:

Major in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Automation and Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Physics or the equivalent.



Engineering mathematics, Linear algebra, Calculus and transforms, Electric circuit theory 7,5 cr., Signals and systems 5 cr., Electronics 7,5 cr., Basic logic design and Computer organization, Introduction to VHDL or Verilog design, and Basic programming skills.

Preferable course experience:
Computer organization and design, Electrical measurements, Semiconductor devices or Microelectronics.

General organization:


The Master's Program in Embedded Electronic System Design (MPEES) is based on the conceive, design, implement and verify (CDIV) concept.

The aim of the program is to educate engineers that can
  • conceive complex embedded system specifications,
  • design such systems at the electronic system level (ESL)
  • implement and verify such systems using state-of-the-art integrated circuit and packaging technologies and electronic design automation tools.

The program provides a deep coverage of the methodologies critical to this conceive, design, implement and verify process. MPEES graduates will be qualified to work as productive engineers in industrial teams designing and building state-of-the-art electronics products, and to undertake graduate studies leading to a doctorate in the field of electronic system design and packaging.


Learning outcome:

After completed studies MPEES graduates are

  • proficient in the basic trade of conceiving, designing, implementing, and verifying complex embedded electronic systems; a trade ranging from software for embedded electronic systems to hardware for integrated circuits
  • proficient in the use of various state-of-the-art Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools used in industry
  • aware of the fundamental limitations of both the design tools and methodologies, and the technology platforms that represent current best practice
  • able to take on new technical challenges and to generate technical advancements in embedded electronic system design or building practices
  • able to carry out qualified industrial tasks within given constraints by applying suitable methods, also when in an industrial context technical aspects might be secondary to constraints associated with economy and environment
  • able to critically, independently and creatively identify, formulate and solve complex problems in the field of embedded electronic system design and to make software/hardware trade-offs
  • able to critically and systematically integrate knowledge to model, simulate, predict and evaluate behavior and events, also with limited or incomplete information.
  • able to clearly and unambiguously communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these conclusions
  • able to work in teams with different engineering competencies for solving complex engineering tasks

The master's thesis work usually comprises a 30 credit project dealing with a clearly defined topic within the field of embedded electronic system design. It can be carried out at Chalmers, in industry, at a research institute or at other universities in Sweden or abroad. All thesis projects must be approved by the program director prior to starting the project. Usually, the master's thesis project is pursued during the fourth term of the program, but it can start earlier if the student has passed at least 45 credits of courses from the program. For students on a five-year Chalmers' program, the minimum requirement for starting the master's thesis work is 225 (180+45) credits.

For highly qualified students with research ambitions, there is an option to carry out an extended one-year master's thesis project (60 credits) provided a suitable project is available and an examiner is willing to supervise the project. The aim of such research-oriented projects is to produce results good enough for presentation at international conferences or for publication in international journals. Only a limited number of 60 credit projects are available and must be applied for in competition with fellow students. The compulsory courses have been defined to provide the student with a fundamental theoretical platform and basic engineering skills in the field of embedded electronic system design. The "three-out-of-five compulsory elective" option has been defined to provide the student with the option of combining breadth with a certain specialization. During their first year, students are recommended to follow one of the following three elective profiles: ESL Design, Building Practices and Computer Systems, but other options are open as well.

The following courses are recommended for these profiles:

ESL Design: Mixed-Signal System Design, Real time systems, Hardware description and verification, Advanced topics in ESL Design
Building Practices: Introduction to microsystems packaging, Reliability and thermal management, Laser engineering, Optoelectronics, Microsystems technology
Computer Systems: Computer architecture, Parallel computing, Compiler construction, Fault-tolerant computer systems

During their second year, students are free to choose 30 credits of elective courses from related master's programs in, for instance, Communication Engineering; Wireless, Photonics and Space Engineering; Computer Systems and Networks. Courses can also be chosen from the fields of Industrial Economy and Management, Entrepreneurship, etc.

The prior award of a Bachelors degree, Bachelors degree in fine arts, professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad.
