The program is designed to prepare students for advanced engineering
careers or Ph.D. studies in the field of communications. This
rapidly advancing field of science and technology will continue
to have an immense impact on human, social, and industrial life
in the foreseeable future. As a consequence, the work market is
exceptionally good for communication engineers, both in Sweden
and around the world.
The emphasis of the program is placed on fundamental principles
for digital communications: coding, modulation, signal processing,
and protocols. However, modern systems and applications are also
treated, for instance, cellular systems (GSM, 3G) and the Internet.
Outline of Course Curriculum
The course curriculum can be roughly divided into three main
blocks: (1) fundamentals of digital communications, (2) wireless
applications, and (3) network applications. There are mandatory
courses in all three blocks, designed to give a broad overview
and a solid foundation for advanced studies. The application blocks
contain four elective courses that give more in-depth knowledge,
and students are required to follow two of these courses (however,
not necessarily from the same block). Moreover, there is the optional
course Computer Introduction, which introduces the participants
to the computer environment at Chalmers and covers the bare minimum
of unix and C and MATLAB programming. This course is not required,
but highly recommended.

The program is concluded with a 20-credit thesis project carried
out at a company or at Chalmers or some other academic institution.
The project can be made in Sweden or abroad.
To pass the program, the student needs to complete all mandatory
courses (marked with * in the list above), two elective courses
(not necessarily from the same block), and the Master's thesis.
To be eligible, a student must have a strong background in
mathematics and passed courses in the following topics at the
undergraduate level, preferably during studies in Electrical or
Computer Engineering. Suitable programs at Chalmers are E, D,
