English proficiency:

An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Undergraduate profile:

Industrial Engineering and Management or an Engineering Discipline.
Note: A Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (BBA or B.B.A.) or Economics does not fulfil the requirement.



Mathematics (at least 30 cr. including Mathematical Statistics at least 7,5 cr.) and studies in one or several of the following subjects: Organization theory, Project Management, Management, Innovation Management, Business Administration and/or Economics, History of Technology (at least 15 cr. which may include a maximum of 7.5 cr. of Sustainable Development).
Preferable course experience: Linear Algebra, Single Variable Analysis and Multivariable Analysis.

General organization:


The Master's degree program in Management and Economics of Innovation provides students with skills to analyze and lead innovation and renewal efforts in companies and other organizations. The program has a clear interdisciplinary approach in which theories and methods from e.g. business administration, project management and economics are introduced and applied. The program thus aims to provide students with a broad understanding and depth of knowledge in innovation management, especially in terms of technical, business, organizational and strategic change, in different types of organizations, both established and start-ups.

Knowledge and understanding

1. Identify and formulate clear problems and knowledge gaps within industrial engineering and management, especially within the field of management and economics of innovation.
2. Describe the knowledge frontier in subfields of management and economics of innovation, and apply deeper domain-specific knowledge to design, lead, manage and improve innovation processes.
3. Use relevant scientific methods to identify and formulate relevant problems and issues and develop solutions in the area of management and economics of innovation.

Ability and skills

4. Analyze, synthesize, formulate and solve open problems by applying and integrating knowledge from various areas of management and economics of innovation, even when access to data is limited.
5. Use digital tools to analyze, synthesize, formulate and solve innovation-related problems, as well as understand the potential and challenges of digitalization in relation to innovation and business models.
6. Apply specialist, leadership and methodological skills to critically and systematically analyze, evaluate and develop new products, services and innovation processes.
7. Communicate (orally and in writing) intentions, methods, results, arguments and assessments to national and international stakeholders.
8. Work independently with research and development in the field of management and economics of innovation or in other qualified activities.
9. Integrate sustainability aspects (economic, environmental and social) into the design, governance, and management of innovation processes.

The thesis work (30 credits) should address a well-defined topic that is related to courses within the master¿s program. The work can be done either in connection to Chalmers, the business community or other research institutes and universities. However, the examiner must come from Chalmers. To start their thesis, the student must have acquired 45 credits from course work in the master¿s program. Students who study a five-year program at Chalmers must have acquired 225 credits before the thesis work can begin. It is possible to complete a 60 credit thesis project given that it has a clear orientation towards research. However, the number of such projects is limited and students must apply for this in competition with others. The aim of such a thesis is that the results will be good enough to be presented at a scientific conference. For further information, please contact the master thesis coordinator of the program.
