English proficiency:

An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Undergraduate profile:

Major in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Textile Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Cognitive Science or Computational Linguistics.

 

Prerequisities:

Programming (at least 7,5 cr.) and Human-computer interaction (at least 7,5 cr.).

Aim:

Given the increased focus on interaction design in general, and on social media, entertainment and new physical products in particular, the Interaction Design and Technologies programme aims to provide tomorrow's interaction designers with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the ever-shifting demands of this emerging segment of the job market. Accordingly, the programme aims at providing students with the ability to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge in how technology, interaction and materials are intertwined. They have the opportunity to learn this knowledge through studying in an environment where they work in design teams to independently develop applications and artefacts, which are described through concepts of use and meaningfulness. The focus is upon design and the use of technology from a holistic perspective to ensure that all relevant aspects are parts of the design process.

 

Learning outcome:

Knowledge and understanding - Graduated students should be able to:
  • describe, in writing and through public
    presentations, scientific foundations and proven experiences within the
    Interaction Design field as well as insights into current research and
    development work
  • apply critical judgment on designs and
    methods, as well as the role of technology in society

  • develop concepts whose originality can be
    motivated through demonstrating awareness of pre-existing examples and design
    approaches
  • describe design problems and solutions
    within the framework of a research context

  • present and argue for design choices based
    on currently available information in a way that shows the ability to integrate
    knowledge from all different areas relevant to a specific design project
  • decide on what choice of technologies,
    algorithms, materials, forms, and general design goals are appropriate based on
    a coherent design approach

  • plan design processes based on an extensive
    range of interaction design methodologies and methods, and draw conclusions
    from experience from using those methods

Skills and abilities - Graduated students should be able to:

  • communicate design proposals based on
    explicitly stated knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and
    non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously, and in national as well as
    international contexts
  • plan and, with suitable resources, carry
    out qualified design tasks within given constraints, including analysing,
    modifying, and specifying requirements regarding specific areas such as user
    needs, functionality, or technology
  • design and define interactive products and
    systems with consideration of
    human needs and
    society's goals for sustainable development, in particular general models of
    users and general user needs, as well as methods to acquire such for specific
    user groups
  • apply their knowledge and understanding, as
    well as problem solving abilities, in new or unfamiliar environments within
    broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to Interaction Design
  • prototype applications and artefacts using
    information technology, demonstrating practical knowledge of conceptualizing,
    creating, testing, and evaluating in iterative process cycles
  • demonstrate core technical skills, as well
    as technical inventiveness, relevant for their preferred field of work

Formulation of judgements and attitudes - Graduated students should be able to:

  • formulate judgments that include reflecting
    on scientific, social and ethical responsibilities and to demonstrate awareness
    of ethical aspects on research and development work
  • critically present insight into the
    possibilities and limitations of information technology, its role in society
    and the responsibility of humans for its use, including, social aspects

  • apply experience of collaborating in teams
    and work in groups with different compositions to judge how to most efficiently
    plan group work
  • search information to learn new skills and
    knowledge in a manner that is largely self-directed or autonomous

 

Extent: 120.0 c

 

Thesis:

The programme includes a degree project (Master's thesis) corresponding to 30 or 60 credits. The rules for starting and carrying out the degree project are described in the corresponding course plans (see the second year of the study programme---linked to below).

There is a possibility to carry out an extended degree project (60 credits) with a clear research orientation. There will only be a limited number of such projects available (applied for in competition with your fellow students), and the requirements of the students are higher than for a normal project. A goal of a 60 credit project is to produce research results good enough to be presented at international conferences or journals.
