The three-year programme in Electrical engineering aims at developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a successful career as an electrical engineer. The education shall be application-oriented and have such a structure and contents that the electrical engineer is attractive in the labor market, and well versed in the role of technology in sustainable development.


Learning outcome:

After completing the programme, students should have achieved broad skills, both theoretical and practical, in the area of electrical engineering as well as good communication skills. Furthermore, they should have achieved knowledge and skills in their chosen area of specialization, mainly in telecommunications, electronics design, computer-aided automation, embedded systems or electric power engineering.

In addition to courses in the core subjects of electrical engineering, the study programme contains blocks in the following areas:

Computer programming: The objective of programming course is primarily to provide students with the tools to program e.g. embedded systems with a high level language.

Mathematics: The overall objective of mathematics courses is to provide students with the mathematical skills and knowledge required for successful studies in the core subjects. The focus is on mathematical concepts and methods which are directly applied in the engineering courses, but also to stimulate interest in mathematics. Examples are taken from (and in cooperation with) core courses in electrical engineering. The goal is that students perceive mathematics as a useful and necessary tool for the studies in electrical engineering.

English: The objective is primarily to provide basic grammatical knowledge of English, as well as training in English communication (written and oral). With well-chosen excerpts from the engineering textbooks in English, the student should be well prepared to study courses which use English course literature and/or have lectures in English.

A 15 credits thesis work is completed during the last semester in study year 3. The project is done individually or in groups of two students. The work is preferably carried out at an external company. The thesis work can be started when the student has passed courses corresponding to a minimum of 120 credits. Depending on the project, specific course requirements may occur.

Title of degree:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering. The main field of study, Electrical Engineering, is stated in the degree certificate.

Other information:

The education comprises three years of full time studies. The programme begins with an introductory course, with a purpose to introduce students to the university and the new classmates. One mandatory element on this course is to learn and understand the electrical safety regulations that apply in the course laboratories. This is also a prerequisite for the participation in laboratory work during the education.

Study year 1 include basic courses in programming, digital and computer technology, basic electricity and electronics, control technology, English and mathematics.

Study year 2 contains mainly core subjects in electrical engineering, like electronics, electromagnetics, telecommunications, dynamical systems and control engineering, measurement techniques, power engineering. In addition to this, there is more mathematics and a course on sustainable development.

All courses in Year 1 and 2 are mandatory.

In the third year, the students choose between the two programme concentrations. The concentration Electric power engineering has manly mandatory courses, while the concentration Common branch of study has both compulsory and elective courses.

Both concentrations have two common courses that prepare the students for more general aspects of working as an engineer: Professional English, and Economy and organisation.

The organisation of the third study year enables the possibility for the student to spend part of the studies at another university in Sweden or abroad.
