Course specific prerequisites

The course aims at giving an introduction to the theory and history of architecture from the antique to modern time. The emphasis will be on the changes in the architect's profession throughout history.

Architecture and urban planning, with emphasis on the work of architects and engineers. History is read and interpreted from the perception of architecture as a merger of art, technology and society.

The course begins with an introduction to architecture as a discipline. This is followed by a series of lectures giving a survey of Western history of architecture. Comments will be made on the course literature, which is to be studied individually and in groups and will be supported by study questions.

Several internationally renowned and reviewed surveys of the history of architecture will be recommended. The literature required will be indicated at the beginning of the course.

Requirements for an overall pass mark include participation at lectures and a pass mark on the written exam.
