Eligibility:

For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.

Aim

The course shall provide fundamental knowledge in order to analyze measurement problems and to design and evaluate measurement systems. It shall also provide knowledge on modern electrical measurement instruments, which will be useful when later confronted
with new instrumentation, possibly based now, presently unknown, methods and physical phenomena.

Goal

The course shall result in the ability to handle modern electronic instruments, to present measurement results in written and oral form, and to develop a critical approach for the analyses of measurement errors following statistical as well as other methods.

Content

We study observations of different physical parameters by using electrical and optical measurement methods. Analog and digital instruments, e.g. oscilloscopes, voltmeters, and counters, are used for acquisition of sensor signals.
Noise, interference, and electromagnetic compatibility are studied.
We explore examples of complete measurement systems, consisting of sensors, measuring instruments and computers.
The problem of quality assessment of a measurement is treated in terms of the interaction between the object under investigation and the instrument. Calibration, traceability and measurement standards are also discussed. Both stochastic (type A) and systematic (type B) measurement errors and the associated error propagation is discussed. The method of confidence intervals is used to present measurement results.

In the laboratory we train the ability to use modern electronic instrumentation and sensors. The characteristics of electronic components are studied and applied signal analysis of sensor signals is carried out.


Organisation

A lecture series and laborative exercises are carried out during the 2nd and 3rd study quarters.

Examination

A report describing a laborative project is handed in at the end of the 2nd study quarter.

An examination consisting of a combination of practical measurement problems and theoretical problem solving based on material studied both in the lectures and during the laborative exercises. This examination is carried out at the last occasion for the laborative exercises at the end of the 3rd study quarter.

Each specific laborative exercise must be passed.

Grades are given.
