TTFYA ENGINEERING PHYSICS, Year 4 (elective)
Examiner:
Docent
Per Salomonson
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Content
The course treats, first discreet groups with applications to molecular
physics and solisd state physics, then Lie groups and their algebras,
with broad applicability within all areas of modern physics, quantum
mechanics not the least.
The classification of Lie algebras is performed with such general
mathematical methods that even infinite dimensional algebras can be
treated. These latter are fundamental in quantum field theory and hence
central in gravity, string theory, etc., and for understanding of
critical phenomena and phase transitions in condensed matter theory.
