Aim

To present modern atomic and molecular physics in a way that will allow the students to understand the subject in terms of the simplest possible physical picture.

Content

The emphasis in the course will be on the electronic structure of atoms and molecules. The atomic physics part will include effects relevant for spectroscopy of the electronic structure of atoms, interaction with light, and atomic physics aspects of laser cooling and Bose-Einstein condensation. The molecular physics part will deal with the fundamentals of the chemical bond, including computational methods like Local Density Approximation, LCAO, Hartree and Hartree-Fock, and simple dynamics (Landau-Zener crossing, barrier tunnelling).

The course expands the concepts introduced in the 3rd year introductory quantum physics (Chalmers) and atomic and molecular physics (GU) courses and illustrates the applications of quantum physics within the disciplines of atomic and molecular physics.

Examination

The course will be passed based on equal parts accepted written home assignments, an oral presentation on a subject chosen by the student, and a final written exam.
