Quantum physics

Aim

This is an advanced laboratory-based course that will introduce some important and far-ranging spectroscopical techniques applied in many areas of modern physics, chemistry and materials science.

Goal

The course will also familiarise students with experimental research, providing a good background for later advanced courses and project work.

Content

The course begins with some general lectures introducing laboratory practice and covering topics such as experimental design, error analysis, report and manuscript preparation and ethical issues. The main part of the course consists of 5 advanced laboratory experiments to be chosen from a list including atomic spectroscopy, NMR, Auger, molecular vibrational spectroscopy and femtosecond wavepacket dynamics.

Examination

Evaluation will be based on submitted laboratory reports (in the format of a Physical Review Letter manuscript) and on evaluation of laboratory notebooks.
