Aim

The course gives an advanced-level discussion of central phenomena, concepts and techniques in condensed matter physics. Of particular importance is the study of key experimental facts and theoretical models which explain them.
The focus of the course is on quantum theory of solids (quasiparticles, interactions, magnetic and superconducting ordering) at the level of N. W. Ashcroft and N. D. Mermin: Solid State Physics. The course tries to provide a working knowledge that can be used for further studies of a more specialized research topic in condensed matter physics.

Goal

To arrive at a physical understanding of solids by applying basic results from quantum mechanics and statistical physics.

Content

What is a solid? Lattices and crystal structure. Lattice vibrations and phonons. Fermi electrons and electronic band structure. Transport in electric and magnetic fields. Electron interactions. The origin of superconductivity and properties of superconductors. Magnetism and magnetic phenomena.

Literature

The textbook N.W. Ashcroft and N. D. Mermin: "Solid State Physics" (W.B. Saunders Company, 1976) will be used. Weekly handouts and review questions will be provided.

Examination

Weekly homework assignments. Midterm and final written exams. Optional Project on a timely topic in condensed matter physics.
