Course specific prerequisites

Basic mathematics and statistics

Aim

To give experience and insights into the techniques to quantify the ambient environment. The course is directed toward physical and chemical methods to measure gases and particles in the atmosphere, trace elements in samples, remote sensing and radioactivity.

Goal

One important objective is learn how to design a measurement programme and to make data analysis by different statistical methods

Content

Planning and accomplishing of an environmental measurement, either in field or laboratory. Methods to study the environment on a global scale by remote sensing. Water vapor, ozone and greenhouse gases will be discussed.
Measurement techniques to characterize and identify aerosol particles and to measure major air pollution gases like sulphur dioxides, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. Trace element analysis by x-ray metods.
Dispersion and measurements of radioactive elements in the environment.

Examination

Oral examination and assignments during the course. Mandatory laboratory works.
