Eligibility:

For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.

Content

The lectures include the following parts: Isotopic effects, isotope separation, nuclear reactions (fission and fusion), creation of matter, radioactive age determination, nuclear energy - the fuel cycle, different reactor constructions, chemical roblems in nuclear reactions, the compositions of spent fuel, fission products and actinides, actinide chemistry, reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, waste problems, nuclear accidents, future energy requirements.

Literature

Selected parts of G. Choppin, J. O. Liljenzin and J. Rydberg: Radiochemistry and Nuclear Chemistry, 3rd Ed. Butterworth-Heinemann, 3rd edition, 2002.

Examination

Written examination: In order to pass a written examination is given which covers lectures and the selected parts in the text book. The examination is divided into two parts; A which is more descriptive (no supplementary material is permitted), and B which consists of problem solving and calculations (almost any type of supplementary material is permitted). Other requirements are that all laborative exercises have been made and the written reports accepted. Grades: When all obligatory parts have been performed, the final grade is based on the grade obtained in the written examination. A study tour is made, funding and interest permitting.
