Aim

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of, and to demonstrate methods for the assessment of, the environmental impact caused by chemical products and materials. It also aims to demonstrate the ecological necessity of adapting products to be consistent with the environment and with a sustainable development of society.

Content

Sustainability and indicators of sustainability.
Material flows from "cradle to grave" for chemical products. Raw material extraction, transport, manufacturing, process emissions, product use and waste handling. Inventory analysis of environmental impact. Different methods for the valuation of environmental and and health impacts of chemical compounds and limitations of valuation methods. Ecotoxicology, environmental analytical chemistry, toxicity tests and environmental hazard classification. Environmental management, ISO14001, EMAS, environmental auditing, Responsible Care. Different types of ecolabelling.
The exercises are based on case studies and consist of practical work on the analysis and evaluation of the environmental impact of chemical products. They include inventory analysis, classification and characterization, valuation, allocation and a critical review of existing life-cycle assessments. Environmentalhazard assessments and the classification of chemical substances are also considered in the exercises.
