Aim

The course will give theroetical and practical knowledge about some important methods (light and X-ray scattering, NMR and microscopy) for structure analysis of colloidal systems, i. e. system with "particles" in the size range of 1 nanometer to 10 micrometers.

Content

The colloidal size comprises "particles" in the size range 1 nanometer - 10 micrometer. The particle may be a macromolecule, for example a protein, or an aggregate of many molecules like a fat droplet in milk. Many chemical products are comprised of colloidal particles and the structure and dynamics of these particles, or the product, as a whole is often critical for the function of the product. Some examples of products are drugs, food and paint.
In this course a number methods will be presented which show structure and/or dynamics of colloidal system:
· light scattering (LS)
· small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)
· NMR for determination of structure and self-diffusion
· microscopy, light, confocal, and electron (TEM/SEM)

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, demonstrations and laborations.
