The course contains theme environment
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Course specific prerequisites
Basic course in electromagnetics or comparable.
Aim
The last 30 years research has shown a number of biological effects of electromagnetic fields. Earlier thermal effects were known. Current research has shown the existence of non-thermal effects at low field strengths. With the exception of the sun, the dominant exposure to electromagnetic fields is from man made sources.
Goal
The goal of the course is to give the students knowledge about sources and measurement technique for electromagnetic fields and how to mitigate the fields. The students shall get knowledge on the scientific basis for judging the research on biological effects of electromagnetic fields.
Content
The course covers the frequency range from DC to UV. The following parts are treated; static fields, ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) fields, radiofrequency and microwave fields, infrared, visible and ultra violet light. For the different ranges sources, measuring technique, penetration of the fields in biological tissue, biological effects, hygienic guidelines, field reduction and other protective measure are treated.
Organisation
Lectures, tutorials and two laborative exercises are carried out during the 3rd study quarter.
In laboratory exercise 1 the students dispose a logging measurement instrument for ELF magnetic fields in order to estimate their personal home exposure. A report shall be written and approved.
Literature
Compendium and scientific articles.
Examination
A written exam. The grade on the written exam is given as final grade after the laborative exercises are approved.
