Examiner:
Bitr professor
Sheila Galt
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Aim
1. To efficiently introduce the main principles of laser physics and laser technology.
2. To give a basic knowledge of the most commonly used laser types and their applications.
Goal
After completing the course one will have achieved a rewarding understanding and overview of the basics of laser engineering as well as insight into the latest state-of-the-art developments of this technology.
Content
Interaction of light and matter, general laser theory, the laser as an oscillator and amplifier, saturation effects, optical resonators, laser dynamics, mode locking, Q-pulsing, tunable lasers, crystal lasers, gas lasers, semiconductor lasers, fluid lasers, laser safety aspects, coherence, laser applications.
Organisation
11 two-hour lectures, 6 two-hour tutorial exercises,
6 home assignments, 2 obligatory four-hour laboratory exercises. The home assignments are not obligatory, but one question will appear on the main examination.
Literature
J.T. Verdeyen: Laser Electronics, Prentice Hall, 1995.
Additional material: "Laser Safety" and "Relaxation Oscillations" will be distributed during the course.
Laboratory Exercise Manuals: available for printing from the course home page.
Tutorial Exercises: will be available on the home page, with answers available after each tutorial.
Examination
Written exam.
