Course specific prerequisites

Materials technology

Aim

This course aims at providing a deeper and wider knowledge and skills within polymeric materials and a deepening of the knowledge in conventional production methods. A specific aspect is put on the understanding of the combination of structure and properties and how production methods affect the material structure.
A part of the course is related to creative design material search, appropriate materials selection, and form creation regarding individual materials, especially related to vehicle interiors.

Content

The course describes the properties and the characteristics and the use of engineering polymers. A widening of the material perspective is given on a
The student will receive basic knowledge in order to gradually increase skills in making design proposals and in evaluating effects upon final product cost, durability and customer perception.

Organisation

The course is organised through lectures, assigned problems and a specific automotive project.
Lectures and assignments treat creative materials search, appropriate materials selection, and form creation regarding individual materials. Special attention is drawn towards common materials related to the automotive interior, within polymers and metals, although design using other materials is treated. Aesthetics and semiotics in relation to materials selection, i.e. colour and trim, are mainly treated through assigned problems although lectures will introduce to theory. An overview of the materials selection process in automotive engineering and industrial design is given.

Literature

Course compendium.
Other literature and handouts are announced at the beginning of the course.

Examination

A written examination will be given on the theoretical part and grades are given according to the scale: not passed, 3,4,5. To get the grade passed , an active presence during lectures and seminars in addition to well executed problems assigned in the course, is required.

The project examination is based on the presentation material and the performance during the task.
