Aim
Aim and goals
The main aim of the course is to give a basic understanding of the strategic effects of designing, managing and improving operations.
The course takes a broad perspective of operations. The operations function within a company is concerned with managing the resources that produce and deliver goods and services.
Goal
To realize the main aim, a number of learning objectives are used. Upon completing the course, the student should have a basic understanding of:
The strategic characteristics of different types of operations.
How operations can contribute to a company s strategic success.
Consequences of strategic capacity decisions.
Strategic effects of choice of layout and process technology.
Strategic effects of managing the relationship between the company s resources and demands for goods and services.
Different approaches to improving operations.
Ways of managing complexity in operations.
The meaning of lean production and how companies can use its principles for improved competitive benefit.
