Aim

This course builds upon the foundation developed in the earlier course on High voltage engineering and provides an advanced level of treatment and a deeper physical understanding of high voltage technologies.

Content

Electric fields in dielectric systems, insulating materials as well as ageing- and breakdown mechanisms are dealt with. Insulation for dc, a challenging research area today, is paid special attention. In addition, the course also connects to other areas of current research interest, such as polymeric outdoor insulation, advanced measuring techniques and diagnostics. An important objective is to illustrate the use of high voltage technologies in non-electric power engineering applications. The experimental skill will be further developed during laboratory experiments covering essential parts of the course i.e. electric breakdown strength, dielectrics and diagnostics. With the ambition to consolidate the understanding of electrical fields and how they can be controlled, a compulsory project work is included in the course. In this project, commercial grade software based on the finite element method will be utilised. Four compulsory laboratory experiments are included in the course dealing with electric breakdown strength, capacitive dimensioning, diagnostics and dielectric materials.
