The course aims to give a basic understanding of central problems within interaction design for ubiquitous computing and computational technology as a material for design.


The course gives theoretical and practical knowledge about prototype development and evaluation, as well as how hardware, software and other materials work together in the design of computational things.


Interaction design is about forming the interaction between people and objects in which information technology is a central component. As computational technology becomes an increasingly important material also in the design of our everyday things and environments, we need a comprehensive view on design with respect to both users and technology. This makes interaction design an area of growing importance in systems development, as well as in industrial and product design.
We can view computational technology as a new material for design, which, like other new materials before, gives us new possibilities in designing and shaping artifacts and environments. Ubiquitous computing can permeate everything and yet be almost invisible.
The course gives an overview of ubiquitous computing with a focus on properties of, and possibilities with, computational technology as a material for design. Students explore the interplay between computational technology and other materials for design, and work practically with embedded technology, sensors and actuators for designing human interfaces that are not based on screen, keyboard, etc.


The major part of the course is a large project carried out in groups. Practical project work in a studio environment is complemented by lectures, exercises, seminars and a personal essay.
