Course specific prerequisites

Students outside the international master program Hardware for Wireless Communications should have completed Foundations for Microwave Engineering", and preferably, Wireless System Engineering.

Aim

Through great achievements in semiconductor physics it is now possible to produce active semiconductor components that yield gain up to frequencies of several hundred GHz. The course will cover the design of transistor based microwave amplifiers and oscillators, as well as non-linear circuits (mixers, multipliers, PLL, etc.).

Goal

The goal of this course is to gain a fundamental understanding of microwave amplifier and oscillator design as well as non-linear microwave devices.

Content

The course treats active microwave circuits, particularly microwave amplifiers. Topics: Impedance matching, stability, design of microwave amplifiers, oscillation conditions, noise/gain optimisation, non-linear circuits, wideband amplifiers, high power circuits, mixers, multipliers and voltage controlled oscillators. The course concentrates around a theme of the year, which is covered by the hand-ins resulting in an operative circuit.
The course contains two lab exercises:
1) Design of a complete amplifier.
2) Mounting of amplifier and measurement to verify the simulated performance.
