Aim

This advanced course highlights the variety of decisions the designers are required to make in their quest to meet drive system technical as well as economical specifications. The teaching is application-oriented and students will be exposed to industrial
practices and standards.

Content

Design concepts and constraints will be studied with special emphasis on systems employing induction, reluctance and permanent magnet motors. Examples of industrial design software tools and analytical methods will be introduced and applied to a number of case studies. The case studies cover a selection of diverse applications, including aircraft fuel pump system, industrial processing and traction drive systems. Students will identify the operating conditions leading to system specifications and propose alternative ways of meeting them.
