Examiner:

Docent  Jörgen Blennow

Eligibility:

For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.

Aim

This course aims to introduce fundamental concepts of high voltage engineering; to provide a rudimentary understanding of the special physical phenomena occurring at high voltages, and finally; to impart basic knowledge in applied high voltage engineering.

Content

Insulation co-ordination, together with dimensioning stresses, represents the central theme of the course. In addition, electric field distribution and field grading, as well as physical processes occurring at high voltages are treated. Techniques such as generation and measurement of high voltages are put into practice during the laboratory experiments, and that constitutes an important part of the course. Three compulsory laboratory experiments are included in the course which deal with electric breakdown of air-gaps, over-voltages considered as travelling waves and lightning impulse testing.

Organisation

Lectures, tutorials, project work and laboratory experiments
