Examiner:

Professor  Tore Undeland

Eligibility:

For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.

Aim

The aim of the course is to impart a sound knowledge in power electronics, analytical methods and design of converter controllers.

Content

This course deals with the behavior of power semiconductors and components of the main circuit such as capacitors and inductors in both sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal conditions. Furthermore, different types of converters, their operating principles, optimization and interaction with the surroundings are dealt with. The valve characteristics and their drive circuits for both analog and digital control circuits are analyzed. The course also describes different power electronic circuits when ideal conditions are assumed as well as including the actual valve characteristics.

Organisation

The course is organized with lectures, tutorials and self-exercises. In addition there is a practical laboratory task as well as computer assignments.

Literature

Ned Mohan, Tore Undeland, William Robbins, Power electronics: Converters, Applications and Design, 3rd Ed., John Wiley & Sons Inc, 2003.

Examination

Written exam. Laboratory exercises as well as P-Spice assignments must have been conducted and approved.
