Course specific prerequisites
The course is open to 4th/5th-year students (or students at an equivalent
level) and graduate students with background in physics and mathematics.
Aim
Cosmology concerns our knowledge about the largest structure accessible to
us, our universe. It is only quite recently that the tools of
astrophysicists have become good enough for putting cosmological theories
through observational tests. The goal with this course is to review the
basic framework, derive different Friedmann world models and study how these
can be tested using various observational techniques. The course also covers
galaxy and structure formation in an expanding universe and how this is
manifest in our observations. The cosmic microwave background radiation
contains small ripples which have the potential of giving us information
about most cosmological parameters. At the end of the course the students
will be familiar with the basic framework of modern cosmology and the current
methods of observational cosmology.
Content
The course contains the following parts: (1) The basic framework, (2)
Friedmann world models, (3) Determination of cosmological parameters, (4) The
early universe and nucleosynthesis, (5) Galaxy and structure formation, (6)
Gravitational lensing. Some of these parts will be covered in more detail
through student's essays, which will be part of the exam.

during the course.
Examination
Part of the exam will be done as an essay, running during most of the course
and with an oral presentation at the end. Part of the exam will be as an
ordinary written exam, covering both descriptive and computational
excercises.
