TTFYA ENGINEERING PHYSICS, Year 4 (elective)
Examiner:
Docent Gustaf Rydbeck
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Course specific prerequisites
The course is open to 4th/5th-year students (or students at an equivalent
level) and graduate students with background in physics and mathematics.
Aim
The course gives a basic description of the electromagnetic field in terms of
geometrical optics and Maxwell's equations.
Although the examples are taken mainly from astrophysics, the course is
sufficiently broad to be of basic interest.
Content
Definition of macroscopic quantities, Maxwell's equations, Relativistic covariance and kinematics,
Radiative transfer equation, Radiation from a moving charge, Free-free
radiation ("bremsstrahlung"), Syncrotron radiation, Compton and inverse
Compton scattering, Spectral line radiation.
