Aim

Unit operations often play a key role in the deve-lopement of environmentally-adapted processes: e.g. the separation of substances that can be recycled in a process and the separation of hazardous compounds.
This is an advanced course dealing with some unit operations of importance for environmental work. The aim of this course is to deepen and extend existing knowledge regarding a group of separation operation where mass and/or heat transport is the basis for the design of the operations. The separation of dust from gas streams is also treated.

Content

This course consists of five parts:
* Humidification operations (cooling towers and scrubbers)
* Drying
* Leaching
* Characterization of solid material
* Separation of dust from a gas.
Humidification operations (cooling towers and scrubbers) are important as they may be used to minimize thermal pollution as well as to recover heat from, for example, flue gases. Drying is one of the most common unit operations in process industries and can be found in almost all branches. A point of interest here is that it is not always only water that is evaporated, e.g. in the drying of bio-fuel a substantial amount of terpenes etc. is also evaporated. Leaching is the main operation in many processes (e.g. in production of paper pulp and in the mining industry). Leaching can also be used to describe leakage from refuse dumps. In many unit operations (e.g. drying, leaching, filtration, fluidisation), the properties of solid material (particle size, pore size etc.) play an important role in the design and operation of these unit operations. Thus, the characterization of solid material is an essential part of chemical engineering. Finally, the separation of dust from a gaseous process stream is very important preventing hazardous compounds from entering the atmosphere.

The course is composed of the following elements: lectures, exercises in large groups, exercises in small groups, design projects and laborations.
