Examiner:
Docent
Peter Folkow
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Course specific prerequisites
Strength of materials, advanced course; Fourieranalysis
Aim
The course gives thorough knowledge of the basic equations that describe
the motion of structural systems, such as strings, rods, beams and
plates. Wave propagation phenomena are also studied in threedimensional
bodies, that is fluids and elastic solids. The course is to a great
extent based on analytical solutions to the dynamic problems, using
various techniques, i.e. Fourier methods.
Content
Wave equations for longitudinal and torsional vibrations in rods, as well as transverse vibrations of strings. Flexural vibrations of beams according to Euler-Bernouilli and Timoshenko theories. The concepts of eigenfrequencies, modal analysis, energy transport, dispersion, phase and group velocities are discussed, using Fourier analysis. Kirchhoff plate theory for rectangular plates with appropiate boundary conditions. Acoustic waves in fluids, discussing reflection and transmission at boundaries as well as waveguides. Models of a loudspeaker. Acoustic waves in elastic solids. Boundary conditions, pressure and shear waves. Waves in thick plates.
Organisation
Lectures 32 h., problem solving sessions 24 h. Optional assignments.
