Aim

The aim of the course is to give knowledge regarding number of environmental systems analysis tools such as Environmental Risk Assessment, Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Materials Flow Analysis. The course also aims at understanding of the relationship between different environmental systems analysis tools.

Goal

For the environmental systems tools that are covered with more depth the goal is to educate the student to a competent receiver and commissioner of environmental systems studies. Additional tools are covered with less detail, and here the goal is only to give an orientation.
Finally, the course aims at knowledge on the application areas for different environmental assessment methods and at providing a conceptual framework for environmental systems analysis.

Content

Environmental Systems Analysis comprises the collection, analysis, integration, valuation and interpretation of information on how technical systems cause or contribute to environmental problems. There are a number of different tools to perform such studies, for example Environmental Risk Assessment, Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment, Materials Flow Analysis, Cost Benefit Analysis and tools for Design for Environment. Some of these tools are covered with more detail, some with less. Environmental systems analysis tools are used in decision making in the design or use of technical system, on many different levels in society. The course emphasises the relationship between tool and area of application, and the relationship between different tools.
