Examiner:
Docent
Anders Nordlund
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Course specific prerequisites
Basic physics and math courses
Aim
This course is of a cross-disciplinary character. It contains parts of nuclear physics, radiation physics, radiation biology and radiation ecology. The part on radiation physics gives insight into the principles of measurement of radioactivity and radiation doses. The course also covers the biological principles of the effect of radiation on living organisms. In particular the effect of radiation on the human body are discussed. The course also contains a section on neutrons, which are being used in an increasing number of applications. This section also includes shielding against neutrons, secondary effects of neutrons as well as the radiation environment at nuclear reactors.
Content
Radiation protection: dosimetri, biological hazard, radiation measurement, laws and restrictions. Neutron radiation: sources, radiation protection.
Organisation
Lectures and two laborations
Literature
"Strålskydd", sold at the department. Unfortunately this book is in Swedish. Corresponding litterature in english can be borrowed at the department.
Examination
Written exam in two part, both of which have to be passed.
