Eligibility:

Aim

The course will provide a basic understanding of the structure-properties relation in engineering materials.

Content

The structure of metals, semiconductors, ceramics and polymers is described starting from atomic-scale and laws and principles will be formulated, which determine their mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. In addition joining techniques, electrochemistry and corrosion, as well as basic failure mechanisms are covered (examples from different engineering fields).

Materials application as well as design aspects are discussed in more detail in another course (MMK 205).

Organisation

The course is divided into lectures and a lab. In the lab a computer program will be used that should illustrate and help to understand topics like electronic structure, crystal structure, defects and phase diagrams (supporting the lectures).

Literature

- W.D. Callister: Materials Science and Engineering - an Introduction, 6th edition, John Wiley & Sons Inc., 2003 (another edition is fine as well).
- Additional literature will be mentioned during the course; a compendium on polymeric materials is available at Cremona
- Exercises, lab description, etc. will be available at Cremona.

Examination

Written exam and approved labs are required for approval.
